The Borough Presidencies of the five boroughs of New York City were created
by the Charter of Greater New York, which took effect on January 1, 1898.
This Charter outlined the duties, terms of service and the salaries of
the Mayor, Municipal Assembly ( City Council), Borough President, Board
of Estimate and Board of Public Improvements.
The parameters of the office of Borough President were responsibilities
for local administration and public works (streets and sewers). The position
was a four-year term with a salary of six thousand dollars. But times
have changed since 1898 and so has the
role of the Borough Presidency.
