former Chancellor of the New York City Public Schools, will join us.

Economic Development
" Economic development has never been more important for New York City. The shockwave that hit the Twin Towers still reverberates through the City
today. The rather small amount of assistance we've received from the state
and federal governments leads many of us to the conclusion that the rebirth
of our City and our economy rests squarely on our shoulders. We'll need
leaders who are creative, determined and persuasive. Leadership will be
required to revive existing business and the sales skills to recruit new
ones. I'm convinced we can do it if we all pull together.”
Housing
"
Every year New Yorkers spend a larger and larger share of their income
on rent and mortgage payments. Nowhere is this complaint stronger
than here in Manhattan. I hear it every day. We need more low- and moderate-income
housing but we have almost no subsidies or incentives in place to promote
its creation. Vacancy decontrol and Mitchell-Lama buyouts only compound
the problem. Seniors and others on fixed incomes are particularly hard
hit. I support raising the income eligibility level for the state's Senior
Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program to protect more seniors
from steep rent increases.”
Education
"
A well-educated work force is a key component in our economic recovery. For
too long the State's education funding formula shortchanged New York City
public schools. The Court of Appeals, the State's highest court, has
ordered major education funding and accountability reforms to guarantee
every City student a "sound, basic education." The Court ruled that
a meaningful "high school level education is now all but indispensable"
to prepare students for jobs that are sufficient to support themselves.
In these difficult economic times of revenue and budget shortfalls, the
full
realization of the results of this decision will require committed leadership
that will persistently advocate for City schools. It's not just our schools that
are at stake; it's our entire economic future.”
Health Care
" More
than 2 million New Yorkers have no health coverage or are under insured. The
state is failing to meet its obligations by slashing Medicaid funding by $1.2
billion. This will cause more families and children to
lose access to care. Already struggling Manhattan hospitals expect to lose
between $150 and $200 million, forcing layoffs of health care professionals
and further cutbacks in service. This is a national problem that will require
us to make difficult decisions. Leaders at all levels of government must
be willing to step up and have the political courage to make them. I know
I will.”
