LABOR

The labor movement in New York has a proud history of protecting workers
rights. In recent years, unions have stood firm as conditions for some workers
have deteriorated, most significantly through reduced benefits. Often, the
bargaining power of unions is the sole barrier between workers’ jobs
and devastating cuts. The issues of union members are the interests of all
workers citywide, and we must guard and protect them.
As President of the McManus Democratic Association and as a State Committeeman,
I have participated in labor rallies. As Borough President, I will continue
to support our unions and will work in the following areas:
Job Security
There is no greater issue for unions than job security. In a rapidly changing
economy, there are no longer the guarantees of employment that existed
in the past. As Manhattan Borough President, I will work with industry
to encourage use of union employees and adherence to a union code of
ethics which treats workers with dignity.
Health Benefits
As health care costs rise, many companies seek to shift the expense of
insurance coverage to their employees. While there is quick fix for he
rapid inflation of health care, it is clear that not all cuts or benefit
shifts are necessary for a company’s profitability. As Manhattan
Borough President, I will support the unions in their efforts to maintain
vital benefits and in lobbying companies so that they understand that
a healthy work force is a loyal work force.
Daycare, Maternity, and Family Leave
As Manhattan Borough President, I will support unions as they seek to diversify
benefits so that workers never have to choose between their families
and their livelihoods. I support the expansion of day care programs for
employees, and I will lobby industries to join the growing number of
companies that offer both fathers and mothers maternity leave, as well
as family leave for emergencies.
